11 ASB Middle School Handbook
Welcome to the middle! The Middle School educators at ASB appreciate the curiosity, passion,
and exuberance that characterize Middle School students. Our Middle School curricula
and programs are designed especially to match the unique needs of students who are
experiencing significant and rapid intellectual, physical and emotional growth. Our academic
program consists of courses in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, Spanish
and French, physical education and health, design technology, art, band, choir, and drama.
Students have extensive opportunities to get involved in Co-Curricular and athletic activities.
We also meet the special needs of students through Individualized Learning Support (ILS),
English as an Additional Language (EAL), and counseling services.
Our Advisory Program
Our Advisory Program is designed to provide each student a place in a small grade-level
group to focus on building relationships and participate in activities building upon ASB’s
core values, mission and Middle School philosophy. Each grade-level is made up of a team of
teacher advisors (led by a team leader) whose members are attuned to the unique needs and
talents of students that age. Students meet with advisors five times per week for up to thirty
minutes in the middle of the day where they form strong relationships and focus on four core
areas: academic, social/emotional, CSR, and Week Without Walls.
Each grade-level has a unique vision for advisory to ensure that the developmental needs of
Middle School students are addressed:
Advisory in Grade 6 is a purposeful program focused on the unique needs of this age group.
Students in Grade 6 need support and guidance as they transition to Middle School and
become more independent academically, socially and emotionally. Our program emphasizes
the importance of leading balanced lives while building safe and supportive relationships,
both peer-to-peer and peer-to-adult, through purposeful, engaging and interactive activities.
Grade 7 Advisory builds upon community focus and academic responsibilities from Grade
6. Students learn more independent strategies for academic success while building
community within small groups and among the entire grade level. An emphasis is placed on
understanding interpersonal relationships by developing intrapersonal skills and knowledge.
Advisors and advisees focus on how individuals “fit” into the larger community. Advisory is a
safe place to strengthen connections among students and advisors.
Advisory in Grade 8 is based upon the importance of students building and demonstrating
leadership and collaborative skills. Advisors serve as mentors to help students live a balanced
life including friends, family, media and academics.
Advisors serve as advocates for each student in their advisory. As such, when students
or parents have questions, concerns or compliments the advisor is an important point of
contact. Advisors will seek to keep informed about each child’s progress at school and support
the student’s academic and personal growth.
